3 Healthy Foods For Your Pet Rabbit
Giving your pet rabbit a balanced and nutritious diet is very important to making sure your furry little pet stays healthy and is getting the right nutrients. Rabbits tend to have delicate bodies and so it is important that as owners, we provide them with the right foods.
Most owners stick with a basic carrot and lettuce diet, but contrary to popular belief, rabbits need a more well-rounded diet that includes foods such as hay, fruits, and vegetables. However, it is important to remember that when introducing new foods, gradually do so to avoid shocking your pet’s digestive system.
Try Giving Your Rabbit These Foods
Below is a list of some of the foods that are healthy for your rabbit to consume:
- Grass Hay: Generally speaking, a majority of your rabbit’s diet should consist of grass hay which is rich in Vitamin A, D, and calcium and also great for your rabbit’s teeth. Make sure the hay is fresh and does not have any mold or dust which could make your rabbit fall sick.
- Pellets: Feed your rabbit fresh pellets that are high in fiber and low in protein. High-quality pellets contain at least 22% fiber and no more than 14% protein. High protein diets can lead to obesity and potentially other problems down the road, so it is best to avoid any high protein pellets.
- Apples: As an occasional treat, apples (and certain other fruits - check with your vet to be sure) are great snacks for your pet rabbit. Avoid giving your pet rabbit an excessive amount of fruits per week. Generally, giving your pet rabbit a fruit treat 1-2 times per week is plenty and provides a healthy snack for your pet. Make sure to take out any seeds, and if your pet rabbit is overweight, it is best to check with your vet before as fruits tend to be high in sugar content.
